Is It Safe to Use AC for Newborns? Here’s What You Need to Know

With summer here, many parents wonder, “Is it safe to use AC for my newborn? Can I turn the fan on full speed?” Let’s put these concerns to rest with some clear answers.

Air conditioning often gets a bad reputation, likely because it wasn’t common in previous generations. However, in today’s world, it’s perfectly fine to use a fan or air conditioner, depending on the outside temperature.

A well-ventilated room is crucial for a newborn’s sleep, growth, and development. A humid environment can cause excessive sweating and even lead to weight loss in babies.

While it’s safe to use a fan or AC for your newborn, here are some precautions to keep in mind:

Do not place your baby directly under the flow of air, whether from a fan or AC. Direct air can dry out the nasal passages, potentially leading to cough and scab formation.

If using an AC, maintain the temperature between 23-27 degrees Celsius, depending on the outside climate. Regularly monitor the temperature to ensure comfort.

Avoid dressing your baby in just a vest or covering them in layers. In an AC room, a light blanket will suffice.

ACs can dry out the room, leading to dry skin. Keep your baby’s skin moisturized, and consider placing a bowl of water in the room to maintain humidity.

Make sure the AC and fans are regularly serviced and cleaned to avoid dust accumulation, which can be harmful to your baby.

Before taking your baby out of an air-conditioned room, switch off the AC and allow the room temperature to adjust to avoid sudden temperature shifts.
